Q: Do you know about cars and mileage and such?
I have a 1996 Ford Taurus, its 4 doors and has about 170 thousand miles on it (a lot I know, the person who had it before me drove it to WA from Illinois). My car averages about 60 miles per quarter tank. I am going to attempt to use this car to tow a 4′ X 8′ U-Haul trailer with this capacity:
* Volume: up to 142 cu. ft.
* Max load: 1,650 lbs.
* Gross vehicle weight: 2,500 lbs. max
* Empty weight: 850 lbs.
I will probably fill it all the way up with my stuff, as well as have myself and 2 small children in the car.

My question is… how do I figure out how much this is going to cost me in gas to drive from where I live in Washington to Buffalo, New York. Its a little over 2,600 miles. Lets say a gallon of gas will be about $3.20 a gallon. Its about that where I live anyways.

How much will I pay in gas?

PS: Please do not tell me that this is impossible, I have already contacted U-Haul and I am determined to do it.

All answers appreciated! Thanks!
Richard A: youre a d-bag. Im not 30, Im 22 and the whole reason I am doing this is to follow a dream.

A: With that load figure about 8 miles per gallon. It’s not just the extra weight but also the wind loading on that trailer. Since you don’t want to be talked out of it may I suggest you ship your kids by some other means of transportation. The safe speed for that rig (and in some states the maximum allowable with it) is 45 miles per hour. That means it’s going to be a long, slow trip and tiring as all get out. Besides, towing that load with that car and the miles it has on it really isn’t the safest thing to do. Especially with the weather, through the mountains you’ll be traversing, at this time of year. U-Haul is out there to rent trailers and trucks, not to advise against unsafe practices. Just because you’re willing to take the risks, please don’t subject your two small children to them. As to fuel costs. At roughly 2600 miles and best guess estimate of 8 miles per gallon with gas at about $3.209 per gallon it is going to run you a bit over $1,000. Figure an average speed of maybe 35 miles per hour, as that load is really going to restrict you and the kids (and you) are going to need a lot of rest stops. That means around 75 to 80 hours driving time. At eight hours per day driving that comes out to around ten days for the trip. You may say, “No way will it take me that long”, but I’ve driven this country from end to end and know what it’s like to drive with small kids. It’s not fun, tempers get short and the trail seems to go on forever at times. Best wishes for a safe journey.

Q: I just bought a 2000 mercedes c230, had a check engine light the next day, just fixed that.. Should I sell?
Hello, I bought a used mercedes c230 with 84,000 miles on it. The car seemed great, but I got a check engine light the next day. I took it back to the dealer but the car was sold “as-is” and illinois has no laws on returning used cars. Well they were able to get the check engine light resolved, but I did some researching and it looks like the c230’s are actually not very reliable, and very expensive to maintain. I still have a loan out for $7900, plus a paid a 2600 dollar down payment. Although the car was listed for $8900 on the web. Something just doesn’t seem right.. This is my first time buying a car and I feel like I am being completely ripped off. Please help, can I sell this thing, pay the bank.. get the title and get rid of it?

A: That car is nice! Check engine has do with emissions. Just get it scanned and fixed. If it runs well without major hesitating or lack of power then it is probably an O2 sensor. Check ALL the fluids and change what needs too be changed. Check the belts, hoses, brakes. Keep up the maintenance and the car should last a long time.

Q: 92 Ford Escort without Title in Rockford Illinois?
The car was my wife’s which I now use for work. It was co-signed for by her stepdad when she was still living at home. He lost the title, however we get the renewal for license plates sent to our address each year. My father-in-law welded the frame back together 2 years ago and the car is totally falling apart. In my oppinion it is not worth the money to get a title for it if I am only taking it to the junk yard. Are there any yards out there who will take it if I show proof that I renew the plates each year?

A: most junkyards require the signed title before they will take it. i have bought many cars and parted them out, then if i didnt have the title i would take a sawzall and cut them up. the yard i take mine too requires you to cut it into 3 pieces and you are supposed to remove the tires and gas tank.

Q: Illinois property desertion law regarding a vehicle left on my property for 4 years?
1999 EX GIFTED OUR VEHICLE TO HIS MOTHER IN THE STATE OF MO PRIOR TO DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS. CAR WAS IN MY POSSESSION. 2000 COURT ORDERED HIS MOTHER TO COLLECT VEHICLE FOR I COULD NOT PROVIDE INSURANCE FOR A CAR IN HER NAME. 2004 I REMOVED VEHICLE AFTER 4 YEARS. CAR HAD BEEN IN MY GARAGE FILLING IT UP AND I PAY MONTHLY RENT FOR THE USE OF MY GARAGE. I NOW HAVE HAD THE CAR STORED ELSEWHERE FOR 2 1/2 YEARS. CAN I OBTAIN A TITLE, SELL THE CAR, AND PAY OFF THE STORAGE BILL?

A: Here is the best answer I can find for you the answer might be long but if you look here it should answer your question,
The section you want is about midway down the page.

Q: Can I use a prepaid credit card ( Visa or Mastercard) to pay for gas at the gas station?
I am an international student in Illinois I have no credit history and its hard to get a normal credit card.
I am going to buy a car, and would not like to use my debit car to pay at the pump but rather use a $50 prepaid credit card if that is accepted at the pump. Please tell if prepaid credit cards are accepted at gas stations.

A: the problem is that at the pump the pump will put hold a Freeze of maybe $50.00 or more
on the card
and then you cant use anywhere until the station unfreezes the hold which some times take
several days
also card has to be register with your name and address and zip code
if you dont do the card will decline

Q: list of auto insurance companies who do not use credit scores in illinois?
im looking for car insurance and need help finding a good rate

A: you’re not going to have much luck there. 99% of insurance companies now use credit scores in their ratings.

Q: Can you recommend a website, to book an upcoming trip?
I live in central Illinois and I will be traveling, with my boyfriend, to Dallas, at the end of October. We will be gone 5 nights/6 days and looking for the best air fare, hotel and rental car. I have used priceline, in the past, to “name my own price” for great deals on hotels, but I have never booked air flights, that way. Thanks!!

A: I always use expedia.com; it’s easy to use and find everything, and change dates.

Travelocity has a good flexibility option too. When showing you air fare, you can move your departure / arrival date a few days on a calendar, and it will calculate the difference.

I like expedia more, though.

Q: Please elaborate on Illinois zero tolerance?
I’m having a hard time dealing with the drastic measures that the state of Illinois takes with teenager underage consumption. My son was guilty of consuming alcohol in a house and was given a minor in possession violation due him being 18. There was another person who had not consumed any alcohol and was given the same violation. I fully understand that these individuals should be punished for their crime but for God’s sake the state of Illinois should use some discretion when handing out the consequences. This was my sons first offense, has no police record, clean driving record, just graduated from high school, employed and will be attending local college. Now he has paid a $200 fine, his license is being suspended for one year, must have an alcoholism evaluation and remedial classes based on that evaluation and then have informal hearing to hopefully get a hardship license. Also, my insurance premiums are going up even though he is an adult yet being dealt with as a minor living in my household and he is not on my policy. This is all a result of being in a house to which he did not drive, had no car and no keys yet he is punished like a criminal committing a DUI or worse. Even better they scar these teenagers for the rest of their lives by having this violation on their record where it will obviously be looked at as a violation committed in a vehicle should a prospective employer look at this lets say 20 years down the road. Is this really what they want to do to these kids devastate their lives cause they were at a party whether or not you had a beer? This is so ridiculous because having an 18 year who is distraught over all this and wanting to not pursue college and quit his job because he can not drive for one year is really way to much. They need to make changes to these laws otherwise they will ruin as many lives as they think they are saving!

A: Anytime you violate the law, you should realize there is a chance you will get caught and if you do there will be consequences. If you don’t like the consequences, then you don’t break the law. The sooner he understands this the better. Making excuses instead of holding him accountable is not doing him any favors.

The fact he was not driving is not substantial. No teen ever got into a car and said “I think I’ll kill someone”, but it happens everyday. For this reason, a proactive approach is best. In other words, you take away the opportunity before it happens.

The good news is this will not have a major impact on college or employment. Everyone makes mistakes, this only shows he is human.

Q: Illinois Tollways… received a bill for tolls?
Im from Michigan and traveled to visit my boyfriend in Wisconsin a few times. I traveled through Illinois obviously, but have never been through there before. I have never been through tollways before. I was using my grandmothers car, so they came back in her name. The bill is for $127. It states its $20 per fee missed. This is the first notice. Do you think I have a chance disputing or requesting a hearing? At least to request to pay half.. since I had no idea what to do at these tollways. Ive never traveled through there.. so I was unaware that I must go through cash lane. Unless youve known people that have traveled through there.. how are you to know?? Please help.

A: How is it so difficult to understand the sign that says there is a toll ahead, and if you have IPass go through these lanes, otherwise go through the cash lanes?
If you drove through multiple toll plazas without paying, it is your own fault.

Q: can 2 different cars owned by the same person use the same license plates.?
in the state of illinois

A: Nope, sorry.

The liscence plate is registered to not only a specific owner,
it is also assigned to only one vehicle.

If you would get oulled over and the registration card doesn’t match the vehicle the plate is for,
you are looking at a healthy fine and possibly having the car impounded.

Q: Should Congress make people with electric cars put a wind mill on top to supply their own electricity?
Say if someone is driving it would charge the car and they wouldn’t have to use power company electricity and say if they go on a long trip from Alabama to Chicago then they could sell the extra electricity to Illinois Power. This way cut down on using fossil fuels and make money on the side.

This might create extra jobs for the auto people to put the tiny wind mills on the cars. You couldn’t put a giant one on as car might fly off the road.
There you go Pat so it would have to be a tiny one or a bunch of tiny ones.

A: Well I am not sure if they should but considering that the idea will not work (1) some might say that it is likely.

Q: I’m trying to find out if something I did was illegal; where can I see a listing of the criminal law code?
I would like to find out, if a person’s car is towed by a professional towing company in Illinois, and then this person goes to the towing place to get her car back and notices the car is not actually locked up within the towing company’s fence but is sitting in an ally and the owner of the car in broad daylight, using her own key drives her car away. Is this breaking the law? Could the car owner be charged for stealing, even though it is technically her personal property? Or does the towing company take ownership of the car once they take possession of it?

P.S. The towing company has contacted me and threatened to go the police… but I didn’t think I could get in trouble for taking my own personal property back?!?!???

A: Go back and pay the bill before you are arrested.

Q: The road test in Illinois?
I just took my permit teat last Monday…and Im getting some practice in on driving with my girlfriend and using my parent’s cars…Does anyone in Chicago or in the South Suburbs know what the road test is like when they take it? What I mean is, where does the driving instructor take you, what streets (if u can remember)? What is the quickest and easiest DMV to go to in the South Suburbs for the road test?
I took the written test last Monday at 99th King Drive and I would like to know where is the easiest and quickest DMV to go to to take the road test in the South Suburbs?

A: I took mine in Aurora IL and failed twice. Although I cant help u on where to take the test (i want to figure out that myself), but I can surely tell u what they expect u to do. Mine was in a residential area, they make u do downhill park or uphill park , reverse round a corner and drive round making u drive thru a school zone and left and right turns.
