Q: Are there rental car agency’s that allow you to go one-way across the States in the U.S.?
My co-workers and I are planning a trip to Florida to go on a cruise in the Western-Bahamas. We live in Illinois and when we were checking the airfare tickets online, together for just the three of us, would be approx $1000. We are trying to save a few $$ bucks so we can spend more $$ on our excursions.

So, are there any car agency’s that happen to go one-way when you rent it? We just need the car for approx. two days to make it down there and then another two to make it back. The cruise is nine days long and it just be ridiculous to pay for days we aren’t even using the car as I am sure that will add up more than what the airfare would be.

So, if we could just find a car agency that will let us drive to Florida and pay for those two days. And then rent from another car agency and bring it back to Illinois to that same dealers company for renting those days. We be set! But yea.. are there car agency’s that like their car’s transferred to other states? I don’t know..

Note: We all have families that need the car otherwise this would not be a problem as we would just drive down there ourselves.

I appreciate any helpful advice!! Thank you!!!

A: Most U.S. car rental companies have one way rentals. But you can easily pay three times as much for a one way rental. Unless you have a corporate discount.
Why not take a train?

Q: suggestion needed for BMW M3 2008?
i want to buy a used car and is located in florida has a front end damaage and i didnot understand why they put the CD title in florida but it is really nice car would it be possilble to get the illinois title or it is waste of time
but this car is listed in a insurance auction at
ezsalvage.com
in bmw M3
this is the vin number they provided me and it is from a insurance auction
WBSVA93568E
how can we get the rest of the numbers is it possilbe
it is insurace auction and we have in order to win the car we need to bid and then they will release the full vin

A: Front end damage can be a huge headache. You would really need to get this car looked over by a mechanic who is familiar with the new M3’s. You could come to find out the frame is bent which you definitely don’t want to hear.

Sounds like you need to find out a lot more information about this car. Also if it sounds too good to be true it usually is.

Q: Need advice plz?
I am an international student in Southern Illinois Edwardsville. As I am new to this place, I don’t know the best possible way of buying a used car. plz help me.

A: Know what you want out of a car. Know what car you want.
Check the internet for what the car is worth before you buy it and even get a rought idea before you go to the dealership.

Q: Registration/Title…whatever?!?
I’m buying a used car on Saturday for $2,500 cash. I was wondering what I have to do as far as the title and registration? Does he just sign the title over to me and I pay registration at my DMV, or how does that work? How much is it going to cost is the main thing I’m wondering? I live in Peoria, Illinois. Thanks!

A: You pay him for the car. He fills out the title with the date, His address if different from that printed on the title, your name and address, sale price and the current vehicle odometer reading and checks off Actual, over Mechanical limit or Unknown Mileage, and signs on the seller line. He must fill out the title with a pen using blue or black ink. If an error is made a single line should be drawn through the error and the correct information written after the error.

You take the title and proof of insurance to the DMV within 15 days and file for a new title and registration and pay the title fee, registration fee and the state sales tax based on the sale price the seller recorded on the title. they will issue you a registration certificate and a set of license plates…

You may drive the vehicle directly home or directly to the DMV on the date of purchase as long as you possess the signed title.

And a copy of the insurance binder which you need to get from your insurance agent before you go to pick up the car ( the agent needs the VIN and Odometer reading to issue your binder ) OR a copy of your current vehicle insurance certification – which is valid for the first 24 hours on the date of purchase of any new / used vehicle for purposes of driving the vehicle to your residence or directly to the agents office to obtain the VIN specific paperwork.

Your responsibility is to make sure that the VIN number listed on the title matches the VIN number on the plate on the dashboard, visible through the windshield at the lower left corner of the windshield / front of the dash…. absolutely matches…. NO Mistakes….

Q: Will you help me please?
I’m a 22 year old white male who is up to my ears in debt. Actually, I put my unknowing parents further into debt than anybody should ever be. It started a few years ago when my diabetic step-father went into a diabetic coma, had several TIA’s (strokes) and became fully disabled. Shortly after this happened, they lost the house they lost the house he had lived in for 20 years. Luckily, my mother was granted early retirement from the State of Illinois, and upon retirement, decided to move to Florida. The move was due to a number of reasons including the fact that my mother’s mother, and older sister live there, and also my step-sister. The move to Florida was a major mistake, and the 3 of us are paying for it to this day. In fact, there was only one good thing to come out of the 3 years we spent there, but I’ll get to that in a minute. My mother was given $91,000 for her retirement, and like a fool, put it down (well, half of it anyway) on a stupid manufactured home, and took out a mortgage on it. I (18 at the time) decided to go with them to Florida, because I was involved in certain activities that would lead to me getting killed, or imprisoned. I was scared for my life, so I fled to Florida to live with them. It turns out, the silver lining of the whole experience was that upon arriving in Florida, my diabetic step-father was placed on the top of a very long list for kidney transplant recipients. This was a gift and a curse. Yes, it saved his life, thank God, but it also placed up in a world of debt. The doctor’s fee alone was over $144,000 , not to mention the other fees associated with such an operation. After filing bankruptcy, I thought that everything was going to get better, but I (as usual) messed things up for everyone else. At the time, I was making pretty good money, and thought I was ready to take on the responsibility of a car payment. I went with my mother to a used car lot, and convinced her to put the car in her name. They gave us a loan for $9,000 and set me up with $276 monthly payments. That was pocket change to me at the time, so I figured I’d have no problems keeping up with my payments. I was wrong. My step-dads health got worse, and he started to make trips to the hospital a few times a month, which led to even greater bills. With my mother retired, and step-dad fully disabled, I did the only thing I could, and relinquished everything I had to them. After doing so, I couldn’t afford to have insurance on my car, so the loan company took it upon themselves to provide me with their own insurance, at the cost of $2000 every 6 months. My monthly car payments skyrocketed up to over $400 dollars a month, which they are still at now. Shortly after losing my very well paying job, we were no longer able to afford the mortgage payments, and ended up losing the house in foreclosure. When we defaulted, all that was needed to own the house free and clear was $10,000. We tapped every resource available to us, and still ended up losing all the money invested, since everyone we knew was either unwilling, or unable to help. After losing our house, we moved here to Austin Tx. where my aunt gave (loaned) us $2,000 to pay for moving expenses, and pay first months rent on the place we’re at now. I’m currently working at yet another dead end job, and we are once again on the verge of being homeless. On top of this, I’m getting threatening letters and phone calls every day from the company that gave us my car loan, stating that if I don’t give them $11,000 (the amount remaining on the loan, due to the added insurance) in x number of days my car will be repossessed, and I will not see it again until the full balance is payed off. If you are still reading this, than I can only assume you are concerned for our family’s well being, and I am hoping that concern might lead to some act of kindness. I’m only 22 and am not very knowledgeable in debt management, but all information and advice is welcome and appreciated. If you might have $11,000 or anything for that matter laying around, and are able to help out, you are a godsend. However, if you might have some other solution to our problems, I would love to hear them. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and God bless.

A: Dude I can’t help you financially but I can give some advice.I am sorry to hear about your situation but you need to start living for yourself and what I mean is;You have to work two jobs.Go to Wal-mart part time then find a full time job.I myself filled bankruptcy years ago and put myself back in dept with a car.Bad mistake;I should have got a hoopty instead.Give the car back then buy a car for 2 to six hundred and fuck the looks dude.Family first but you also have to be a man and take care of yourself also. That is kinda hard to do with your family illness.Pray and start going to church and talk to god.The bank wants the money and still might repo the car and keep your money.find another car first then turn the car in to them.Be prepared for them to try to stick it to you with the remaining balance of the loan.Send what you can to prevent that from happening.Bail yourself out homie.Good Luck And God Bless.

Q: Poll: Has this ever happend to anyone? What did you do?!?!?
I am 21 and just got a new used car. I needed insurance so my mom and I were shopping around and when they went and looked at my driving record it said I have FIVE speeding tickets and a ticket for driving on a suspended license!!

First off I have Never ever even gotten any moving violation!
Secondly I have never had a suspended license.

Two of the tickets were even before I got my drivers license. It was after I had gotten my permit but before I got my drivers license. What should I do? Has this happend to anyone before?
If its happend to you what ended up happening?
Also I live in Illinois I dont know if that helps at all.
Isnt this crazy? I know my credits ok because they ran my credit when I bought my car.

A: You need to contact the state driver’s license division and dispute the extra tickets.. it is possible that someone with your same name has these violations and that is where the confusion is coming from. The same thing happened to my brother..

Q: 2000-2003 Toyota Celica GTS possible buyer questions?
Hi All,
Looking to buy a good used 2000-2003 Toyota Celica GTS, and have come across several questions that I would like to have answers to:
1) Do the 2000-03 GTS’s run on a timing chain? Or a timing belt? If a chain, what is the service recommendation (if any).
2) How well do the Celica’s get around in the snow? I live and commute extensively throughout Chicago and Illinois area, so snow is plentiful!
3) Most of the Celica’s that I have looked at so far have anywhere from 75,000-160,000 miles on them. Obviously, maintenance is key w/ any good used car, but are there any red flags/issues that I would need to be aware of that are specific to Celica’s in general.
Thanks for your time and input!

A: go for a gt4- they are 4 wheel drive.

Q: I have tickets on my driving record that arent mine!?!?! PLEASE HELP!!?
I am 21 and just got a new used car. I needed insurance so my mom and I were shopping around and when they went and looked at my driving record it said I have FIVE speeding tickets and a ticket for driving on a suspended license!!

A: This happens to many people, thousands perhaps.

You may have had your identity stolen.
There is someone, perhaps several people, who are going around carrying identification that say they are you. They get in trouble, It goes on your record. They steal money. It goes on your record. When you try to apply for a job, go to college, borrow money to buy something, you get denied, because you have this bad record.

Depending on where the insurance place was looking, they may have found another person with a name similar to yours. Did they check the AGE and BIRTHDATE of the other person with same name as yours, to see if the description of that person even sounded like you, or did they go purely on your name.

You need to do a series of actions to get your record cleaned of this bad information. Your mom can and should help.

Check out FTC and other government web sites for what you can do if you think you are a victim of identity theft.

Try to get from the insurance company a print out of these allegations against you.

Try to get from the DMV the OFFICIAL record on you.

Once you have the official record and the insurance company record side by side, you can see where the falsehoods are, so you know where to take appropriate action.

Sometimes errors can be fixed merely by informing the people who are in charge of the false records.
Sometimes they have to be shown proof that the records are false.
Sometimes legal help is needed to force them to fix records.

You need to keep like a diary of your expenses associated with getting your record fixed, who you told about it, what they said … this is because if you ever find the person(s) responsible for messing up your record, you can have a lawyer go after them to reimburse your expenses, and any damage associated with this.

For example, suppose you can’t go to some college, or you lose a job because of this. A lawyer can estimate the financial damage that does to you, and sue the people responsible for that value.

Q: Mazda3 or Impreza 2.5i?
So im about to get a new(used) car and ive narrowed it down to an 07ish Mazda3 or 07 Impreza 2.5i. Ive always wanted a subaru and was 90% leaning towards one until i saw a mazda3 in real life, lol, and now im torn. AWD would be nice for illinois winters, but mazdas interior is so much nicer. My main question I guess would be, which would be more reliable? Hows a subaru boxer engine stack up against a mazda’s? Expensive to upkeep/replace parts? Hard to work on? Ive only had Hondas so replacing engine parts have been pretty easy….thanks for any opinions

A: The Mazda 3 ,My friends bought one a while ago now which had less mileage than my shoes and i was excited for them,i like Mazda’s so was looking forward to them coming round to show me.

The car did look great and i was happy for them, although we went for a run and i sat in the back it was horrible, the seating felt really uncomfy the dash looked boring and horrible overall i was not impressed, but it may drive well so i had a go infact i drove it for a good while,no is was no better the performance was flat the seats again where uncomfy and just the general drive was a really bad experience, now i have to be careful here as i drive cars for a living so daily i drive a mix of cars and personally i own sporty cars,so performance may stand out to me comfort wise i can argue as said i drive sporty cars where the seats are often like rocks so for the Mazda to feel uncomfy was a shock.

As for the performance again i come from sporty cars, yet my friends partner had come from a 1.0l Fiesta, and the Mazda although a lot bigger engine than she was used to scared her with its flat spots, even more so as she uses main roads for work and she is to scared to overtake and when she has to slow down the Mazda takes that long to regain power other vehicles are tight behind her and scaring her.We looked at this on the net where people had said that they had tried to get that extra power dropping the gears all the time only to break there trans boxes.

Next prob was it had major fault on the brakes and exhaust again this car was like new but a phone call to the garage and these areas are not covered,me thinks they knew of these faults,so a like new car now cost them a ton off money to fix.

So overall i was not impressed, although i do see many owners say how good they are,but over 20 years on the road and a mass of vehicles i have driven i can only guess the Mazda seems good to them as maybe they have not driven many other cars and this is prob the best they have driven but a few decent cars to there experience more i bet would soon change there mind.

Myself i would def say the Subaru the engines are really good and impressed me.

Parts wise my friends went to Mazda and they where stupidly expensive, yet as the car is on the same platform as the Ford Focus they paid half the money from Ford for the same part.

Q: Need advice for sister in financial trouble?
My sister is separated from her husband and has moved out on her own for a few months now. She has realized that she has gotten herself into a financial hole with living off credit cards initially and buying a used car. She now has a job (probably only about $9 an hour) and wants to know if she can get any assistance temporarily through the state of Illinois? I don’t know if the state counts her husband’s income and assets that are in both their names eventhough she doesn’t have access to any of that? She does get the kids on weekends, but apparently their legal case is in “limbo” because they want to try to work things out without having to go through a huge divorce proceeding. I know this is a multi-faceted question, but what advice or suggestions can I give her? I’ve told her to go back to school and finish her degree!!! In the meantime though she is buried under an enourmous amount of debt and supposedly not even able to buy groceries.

A: If nothing else, for groceries, there should be a local food bank.
As for other financial issues, unsure where to go in your particular state. Perhaps you can look for some answers at your local web page (state, county, city) to see what kind of assistance is available.

Isnt there any policemen out there who have heard of this? Please help.

Theres nothing wrong with my credit because it was checked when I bought the car and I dont have any.

A: Somebody is using your information. It worked the first time they were stopped, so they kept doing it.

It has to be someone who knows, or knew, you well enough to know your full name and date of birth.

I would go to the department that issued the citations, and explain this to them. They can check the citaitons…. maybe this person was fingerprinted and photographed. Even if they were not, the vehicle information would be on the citations also. This should give a pretty good idea of who did it.

They may have signed for the citations too, leaving a handwriting example as evidence. There are several ways the police can prove this was not you.

Once you prove it was not you, the information will be corrected, and the person using your identity will be looking at some pretty serious charges.

Q: improper lane use illinois?
I was driving my friend’s car, without him in it. I got pulled over by a cop for briefly driving in the left lane at night. He gave me an improper lane use ticket. Since im 17 i have to go to court. What are my options from here? Is my friend’s insurance going to go up? If I take a class, will it not affect his insurance at all?

A: Unless you had an accident or damaged someone’s person or property, your friend’s insurance will not go up. Your insurance when you buy it will be higher due to getting a ticket. Cops like to nail young people because they never contest the tickets, never hire an attorney, and always appear surly and disheveled before a judge.

Put on a suit to go to court, get a haircut, be sure you shave all that stubble away.

Plead not guilty. look the judge in the eye, be courteous, and if you can afford one, get an attorney.

It was lousey of the cop to ticket a young driver instead of taking the time to educate you.

But then cops suck!

Q: Can i get emancipated? (illinois)?
i’m going to be 16 december 1st.
i did research on emancipation and it said you have to prove your mature and be sixteen.
and give good reasoning for wanting to me emancipated.
i don’t want to spill my guts out on here so i’ll make it short:
my moms is pshyco.
alcoholic crack head ex step dad that still is in my moms life.
hes always over and when hes around my mom is mean to everyone except him.
she does not discipline my younger siblings.
she doesnt have much money.
the main reason i want to get emancipated is because my ex step dad is still around and my mom will not let him go. to prove the way he is theres a lot of police reports. hes hit my mom a lot and left us for days and kicked us out with no money or place to go. and we keep moving. im tired of everything that goes on at home.
as for being mature, my mom will say im not mature but of course shes going to say that. i clean the house, i can kinda cook, and ive never had a job because im only 15 and i need a car, because if i dont have a car but i have a job, i wont be able to get to that job because my mom would never let me use her car. so the day i turn 16 i plan on having a job and a car. and my grandma gives me money every week so im saving that. i have done stupid stuff in my past but im over that.
i also just want my mom out of my life, not my dad. so can i get emancipated from one parent?
i just want info on this..
i could move with my dad but he said if i just got emancipated from my mom he’d give me permission to live with my best friend because her parents said i could!

A: Maybe you could move in with your dad?
Emancipation doesn’t mean you wont be either of your parents child any more, it just means they are not your legal guardian – you are. You can then choose whether you want to communicate with your parents or not.
You need to have some sort of income (a stable job), to prove that you can support yourself, they’re not going to emancipate you, only to have you homeless.
I would put together a file of the police reports, and a letter of reccomendation which you can get from a social worker (for free). You can also get one from legal aid (for free) and talk to them about emancipation and how to go about it.
You can read about it here:

http://www.illinoislegalaid.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.dsp_content&contentID=3221

You should also consider all the costs you will need once you are emancipated (even though you aren’t yet, it’s good to prepare a budget – helps you look mature and organized), including rent, food, utilities, schooling, etc. You can probably get financial aid for most of these once you are emancipated.
Also, think about what will happen to your siblings.
Good luck.

EDIT: You can’t get emancipated from one parent – just both. If you want your dad to be your legal guardian, he will have to apply to be your legal guardian – not your mother. Once you’re emancipated, you don’t need permission from your dad to live with your friend – you can live where you like, you’re your own legal guardian.

Q: What can you do about the state demanding your plates after a DUI?
A friend of mine was convicted of a dui. He’s getting his life back together, and part of that has been a mutual friend of ours driving him around in exchange for use of a car that wasn’t going to get any use otherwise. The state (we live in Illinois) sent a letter yesterday saying that title and plates are to be surrendered by next Wednesday. Apparently in Illinois state you can’t have a car registered in your name if you have a revoked or suspended license. Is there anything that can be done? Can he sell the car for a dollar to a friend? Is there any application for a stay of surrender?

A: First time I heard of such a thing. Are you sure everything is all right with that car, including insurance?

He can sell it but once they check the dates on the new title for the new owner they’ll find out he sold the car after the letter and that he might be “held in contempt,” and that wont make his live any better. If he try to “fake” the dates then he will go to jail for altering an official document.
