Q: Do I have to pay sales tax on a gift car from another state?
My father recently gave me his 1995 Lincoln Town Car valued at about $2000. I am about to transfer the title. He lives in Wisconsin; I am in Illinois. I’ve checked my local DMV website, but cannot find anything about whether or not I will have to pay taxes on it.
A: you might have to pay when you register but you probably need to inform them this was a gift from a relative, that might have some bearing on your paying sales tax
Q: Bought a car with no title?
I bought a car off a freind. He has ownership of the car and his name is on it in the State of Illinois. He wrote me a bill of sale. He does not have tht title, he lost it.What could I do to title the car?
A: Your ‘friend’ will have to apply for a lost title through the DMV and transfer it to you after he receives it.
Hopefully, he is the real owner of the vehicle.
Until that is done, you won’t be able to register it under your name.
