Q: Can a 18 year old purchase a car in Illinois?
I live in Nebraska. I’m 18 and am about to purchase a car from Illinois (muscle car if you’re wondering why I’m making such a long trip) and I plan to pay cash. It’s from a dealership so I don’t know if it will require any kind of contract or agreement to be signed that cannot be signed by minors (It’s 19 in Nebraska).

A: The age of majority is 18 in IL, and the laws of the state where the sale takes place are the ones that are applicable. In IL you would be considered to be an adult, and can sign any contract.

Q: is it illigal to have blue lights under the dash in illinois?
is it illigal to have blue lights on the inside of a car in illinois?
i made a blue led bar for may car so that i could put it under the dash by the gas and break pedals OR under the seats?

A: Not from that State but you should check with the DMV or Highway Patrol in your Start.

Q: For an antique car enthusiast in Northern Illinois- any cool ideas of nearby places to visit?
We are looking for a good idea for my father-in-law in the Rockford area, to getaway for the weekend and maybe see some cool cars, go to a car show, anything like that. I don’t even know where to look to find info on things like this. He is into antique cars, such as 1939 pontiac, and more. Thanks!

A: there are 2 local car clubs in the area that im in. 50 miles to the southwest in sterling/ rock falls. Amor Latino and Twin city cruisers. car shows are usually seasonal (spring/summer) I dont know of any upcoming events at this time. Sorry.

Q: How Old Do You Have To Be To Rent a Car In Illinois?
If You Are Under 18 can you have your parent “co-sign” or something of the like?

A: i own a shop and if your under 21 you have to have a co-signer on it over 21 you can rent it on your own,and that’s about the law about anywhere you go to these days, good luck hope this helps.

Q: I want to purcahse a car in Illinois, but I live in Wisconsin. Is there anything special that I need to know?
Are there any extra fees?

A: It is a different state.

Q: Is it legal to install a HID headlight kit on my car in Illinois?
I just need to know if it is legal.
Is there a reason why?

A: it is illegal! because of the type of housing lamp your car has is meant for Halogen bulbs. (Im assuming is reflector type http://automobiles.honda.com/images/2008/cr-v/exterior-gallery/gal_lg16.jpg) this kind of housing reflects the light to the ground and it is specially engineered so that there is no glare to oncoming drivers. The light from a real hid bulb is scattered different in a reflector housing, because the housing was not meant for hid bulbs, and this will happen glare http://www.intellexual.net/hids/5.jpg you can see light on the rails on top where the black poster. This is what blinds people. With a housing(usually projectors because of a better light output but sometime you will see reflector headlamps with HID) for hid bulbs this will not happen instead you get this clean cut off line http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/4290/bbbbbml1.jpg no glare. So, in a nut shell yes Illegal because the halogen headlamp housing is not compatible with the H.I.D bulb. But Ive seen cars with hid and they seem not to have problems with the cops and or inspections(if it applies to your state)
(you can do a retrofit where you buy an HID approved projector and put it in your lights)

Q: When buying a car in illinois, can they put the co-signer in as a primary?
The dealer i had bought the car from put my co-signer as a primary which ca not be drivin because he is an illinois lisenced but lives in indiaana. I was to be the primary but i have no certificate or origin to register the car my time ran out to register the vehicle. the deal has been funded and no one is working with me on getting results. If i can’t register the car, there is no proof of ownership, right? I want the dealer to take back the car instead of working the deal out, i’m very unhappy about the whole situation

A: The paperwork will be sent to the residence on the Drivers License of the primary signer on the contract. This came about in 2006.

A co-signer is a co-buyer since all tiles are now processed with between the buyers names, not as they were in the past. Dealerships will shuffle names around depending on lender stipulations as well as credit scores.

There is no backing out of the deal and your proof or ownership is your name on the contract. If your co-buyer doesn’t have the paperwork, nor does the dealership, then it was sent to the Illinois address on your co’s drivers license. I certainly understand your frustration and I hope this helps.

Q: Can you title/license a car in Illinois if you do not have a license?
My father passed and my mother, who is disabled and does not have a license, added myself and my brother to her insurance so we could drive her, now the plates are expiring. Can my mother renew the plates with no drivers license?

A: There is a difference between ownership and operation. She can own the vehicle meaning she can register it, but she cannot drive it.

Q: At what percent of damage will State Farm total a car in Illinois?
It is a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer with about 73,000 miles.

A: Are you the insured or claimant?

“Typically” it’s anywhere from 65-75% but there are a lot of variables that go into that.

Q: What should I do if I got a speeding ticket (85mph in a 70 zone) in Indiana in a rental car from Illinois?
Should I just not pay it, pay it immediately, or contest it?

A: If you look at your rental contract you will find a sentence stating that you are responsible for any and all moving and non-moving traffic violations. However you decide to play this out, you will end up paying the fine yourself or the rental company will charge it to your credit card if it ever comes back to them. .

Q: Does anybody know what the usury laws for car loans in Illinois are?
I know the usury law in Illinois is 9%, but everywhere I try to research for bank and auto loans, it says that can be a different rate, but nowhere does it say what the highest rate allowed by law is. Can anyone help on this matter? Thanks so much!

A: The key is that the highest rate allowed by Illinois law for banks domiciled in Illinois is 9%. However, states do not have teh power to regulate interstate commerce, so a bank which is domiciled elsewhere but does business in Illinois has the option of charging either the 9% Illinois maximum rate or the maximum rate as set by the state in which the bank is domiciled (is registered). Since a number of states have no usury laws (Delaware and Georgia for example), this is where banks tend to domicile and as such, they are not regulated by usury laws where they do business.

Q: How do I register and title my car if I live in Pennsylvania but was given a car from Illinois.?
The title is signed by me and the person who gave it to me. And I have insurance on the car.

A: Go to the DMV, they will have to fill out paperwork and then they will send you new Plates and registration stickers.

Q: How long would car travel from Illinois to Nevada take?
How long would it take to drive from Chicago, Illinois to Reno, Nevada?
HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK IT WOULD COST IN GAS???

A: Mapquest is flawed! use google maps, it works out pretty good, it takes into consideration the speed limits in each state and county. I got lost using Mapquest once, never again I will use it.

Q: Am i allowed to have neon lights under my car in illinois?
I live in chicago and just wanted to know if i can drive with neon lights under my car as the previous owner had it built in.

A: No. you cannot drive with them on
Illinois law [625 ILCS 5/12-201 to 5/12-212 (especially 5/12-212(c))] prohibits these while driving on any road-way.

You can use them when the car is parked or at certain car events

Q: Can an Illinois resident buy a car from Wisconsin?
I want to know if I can buy a car in Wisconsin even though I live in Illinois.

A: Why not? Does Illinois have a law that makes it illegal to import cars from Wisconsin?
As long as you register the car in Illinois and pay any taxes/fees that come due, there should be no reason why you can’t buy a car in any state and bring in into IL.
