Q: Sunday Laws Illinois: Can You Give A Car Away?
As a Sunday Law in Illinois, vehicle sales are prohibited. But, could a dealer give a car away? I’m working on a hypothetical case for my law class, and a person won a car on Sunday at a golf course via a dealership. There was a contest, and whoever hit a hole in one received the vehicle. The man hit a hole in one, and wasn’t believed, so the dealer didn’t give him the car. Would the fact that it happened on a Sunday affect the outcome of the case?

A: The actual transaction of giving the car away would probably not take place on the Sunday anyway due to paperwork that needs to be processed for the title transfer. The person would win the car on Sunday but not take possession until Monday.

The winner would probably have to pay sales taxes and transfer fees on the “free” car that could ammount to a pretty penny depending in the value of the car. And also depending on the value of the car, the winner might also have to claim that value as income on their income taxes too.

If the dealer refused to award the car to the hole in one winner according to the pre-printed rules of the contest, the dealer could be sued for fraud by the winner. The pre-printed contest rules would have to include the …but not on a Sunday… rule in order for the dealer to legally refuse to surrender the prize, and even then, the winner might be able to challenge that provision to the contest as being unfair. A good attorney might even be able to win that case if it goes to a jury.

Not believed by the dealer???——The preprinted contest rules would have something in there regarding the verification of the hole in one. Dealer would be insane not to have anything in the contest rules regarding the verification of the hole in one. Car dealers are not the smartest people on the face of the earth, but they aren’t that dumb.

Q: Wanting to buy a used car, how much will the extra fees cost?
Hello i’m looking at buying a 2005 pontiac grand prix. I’ve found a few for around $7000. I was just wondering how much the Sales Tax, Title, License Fee, Registration Fee, Finance Charges, Emission Testing Fees and Compliance Fee cost. Those are all the fees listed. I live in Michigan if that helps but i’m looking at getting the car in Illinois. Thanks for the help!

A: Ohh wow well it depends you should just have someone drive you to Illinois so you can save ur 600-800 fee to get the car from ONE dealership to the other, I know Carmax does that…now 6% will be the sales tax in Michigan, a title on the vehicle in Illinois is around 65-78 bucks or so….so its prob the same in MI. Sales tax in Illinois is way higher 6.5-7.5% depending where you live…but yeah =) you should just get the car in Michigan…. When I got my car in FL I told the dealership I would pay MONEY CASH DOWN and it had to add up to what I wanted if not I would shop someone where else and I told them I had a trade in. I traded my 2010 CTS-V for the 2011 CTS-V coupe paid 75 grand cash with all the extras, and modifications including extra fees…so the dealership will make a deal if you have something to offer…Im sure if you tell them you’ll pay 8 grand down CASH including all the extra fees im sure they would prob say heck yeah….

6% of 7000 is $420 so if you are getting it 6.5-7.5 depending on city you are dealing with $500 or so $65-78 you are already looking at $578 by the time you add the other charges you got 1000 bucks extra and prob more since you’ll have to drive from MI to ILL.
