Q: Question about unmarked police cars?
Watching old cop shows from the 70’s,they used to put the old Mars light on the roof of their car when responding to a call.Does anyone know when that was stopped and why it was stopped. Here in Chicago, the unmarked police cars have flashing headlights.
A: I don’t know when it stopped, but I can tell you why. In those old movies, how many times did you see the light go flying off during the pursuit? When they start taking corners at high speed, the magnet is not enough to hold it on.
Not to mention most cars now days are maned by only one officer not two. In the movies it was usually the partner that put the light on the top. Have you ever tried to drive fast, talk on the radio, and place a light on the top of your vehicle at the same time? It’s not very easy.
With time comes technology. They now have ways of making lights smaller and brighter and able to be concealed in the dash or grill. These lights can be turned on with a flip of the switch and you don’t have to worry about them falling off during the pursuit.
Q: How damaging is Chicago (or any other extreme weather places) winter to your car?
I’m talking about rust to any other types of damages you can think of. I’m gonna be moving to Chicago area from southern CA and am bringing my car with me. I just wanna know if it’s worth it to buy a winter car that I don’t have to worry too much about wear and tear in Chicago winter. My current car is worth about 10k right now. It’s been well-maintained but a rear wheel drive (bad in snowy condition). So I’ll have to get winter tires for that car if I were to use it in Chicago winter. What do you guys think? Do you have a winter car? Is it worth it?
When I say a winter car, I mean a car that you drive only in winter. It is assumed that you have another car that you drive in late spring/summer.
A: If you can afford a second car go for it. A 4 wheel drive with winter tires (if they are still legal since I lived there)might be a good choice but you still have to have a good simonize wax to prevent rust. You will have to learn how to drive in snow and on ice not that everyone themselves knows how to drive. Which brings me to the unpreventable accidents like sliding on black ice and such which can cause chain reaction of multiple wreaks. You will also need to learn the right things to carry, which will give it more weight in the trunk which is a help for traction. When/if you get to Chi town it might behoove you to contact AAA they should be able to give you all the advice you will need .
Q: How do I convert my Chicago garage space that opens with a key to one I can use a clicker to open. how much?
I’m renting but Im sick of turning my car off getting out keying open the garage then getting in my car turning on and backing in. The cheaper the better as I am not the owner.
A: Are you saying that there is an electrical switch that you now use? If so, you can get a replacement remote. It contains a receiver and a couple of transmitters. They are easy to install and not too expensive.
Q: How to go to chicago Indian embassy from Waukegan?
I have no car and have recently reached US.
Using public transport, can I go to Indian embassy from Waukegan (60085)
A: There is a trip planning tool on the rta website that will tell you how to get to your location.
In general – take the UP-N Metra (union pacific northern) to its last stop (ogilvie transportation center) and then take a bus to NBC tower (both ogilvie and NBC tower are listed as attractions in the trip planner).
Q: Chicago now wants to use private security forces instead of Police in some areas…good or bad idea?
http://cbs2chicago.com/local/police.private.security.2.966243.html
Can Private Security Guards Act As Cops?
That’s Exactly What They May Soon Be Doing On The Far South SideCHICAGO (CBS) ―
These private security cars patrol Michigan Avenue between 100th and 116th streets, and a proposed city ordinance would give them many police powers.
.
A: In Chicago everyone is on the take, so it makes no difference unless you hire blackwater, let them have the ghetto fence it off keep the thugs in one place and see what happens, hell put up cameras and make it a pay for view
Q: Can I use my friends IPASS in chicago?
I received tickets for using my friends IPASS. We drive my car because it was bigger. He was with me. Can I get out of these tickets. They are $167. Absurd.
A: If you used an I-PASS, how did you get the tickets? Unless it didn’t register when you went through the gate, it wouldn’t have taken your picture. The transponders are registered to specific plates. Just a note: The transponders don’t work through some windshields …example, Buick Roadmaster has a “gold Windshield”, a reflective metal coating to reflect the sun. If that’s the case with your car, you are going to have to pay.
Q: I am a single mom planning to move to Chicago in one year.?
I was wondering what neighborhood, or area of Chicago would be best to move to. I’ll need public transportation close by (selling my car before I move) . I am on a tight budget. But want to be in a safe area, good neighborhood with diversity. I have a son that is 12 and want an area with good schools! I use to visit chicago in the summers when my brother was at Northwestern. Love it .and can’t wait to FINALLY call Chicago home in a year. Thanks!
A: I live in Plainfield Illinois, it isnt really Chicago, its a southwest suburb about 40 miles from downtown, but if you plan on taking trip to the big city frecuentley, it would get kind of expensive. But if you only go occasionally, I would highly reccomend it. It is still a developing town, with about 40,000 residents or so.
Were building a 4th high school, we have about 8 middle schools, and more than 10 elementary schools. I would say the schooling is fair, we did have a teachers strike 5 years ago, but since then, everythings been good. It is Plainfield School District 202, if you wanted to do some research. The best schools in the area are the Naperville schools though. Naperville is a good amount more expensive than Plainfield, but if you plan on moving here, do it soon. In the past 4 years, my $350,000 house is now worth nearly $500,000, and it will be alot more than that in the near future. Basically, if a home in Plainfield costs $300,000, a home in Naperville would run you more in the $500,000- $600,000 range. But, Plainfield has a great variety of homes, from townhomes to small single family homes, to upscale $1,000,000+ homes. It is a very diverse area, and is rapidly expanding, but like I said earlier, its getting bigger by the day, and new schools are being put up left and right.
Its a very safe area, but if your looking for alot of public transportation, this isnt your place: you basically need a car here. But overall, decent schools, very safe, great diversity, tons to do, great restaurants, but may get on the expensive side. Most of the cities closer to Chicago arent that safe; once you get out near Naperville and Plainfield, thats when it becomes safer.
Q: What’s the name of the Chicago blues song where the guy tries to start his car on a cold winter day.?
He uses his guitar to imitate the sound of a car trying to crank over with a not so fresh battery
A: Not sure if it’s the song you are looking for but there is one called “My Starter Won’t Start This Morning” Here is Lightning Hopkins doing a version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3SXKLas-ko
Many artist have played it.I can’t say for sure what artist played car sounds with his guitar, but Albert Collins comes to mind.
Q: Columbus, Ohio to Chicago…what do I really need?
I recently relocated from Columbus to Chicago, but decided to leave my car in storage since I use the CTA and Metra here for cost-effectiveness. However, I miss my car, and I want to bring it up here. The thing is, the cars around here have almost the entire driver’s side corner of the windshield covered in stickers. I live just north of Lincoln Park, and south of Roger’s Park and Loyola University. I know I need to get my plates and registration switched over as well as update my IPass info, but what else?
Do I need a city sticker even though I park in a gated lot? Will I need a permit for my area? Do I need to get an emissions test like I did when I bought it in Ohio? I drive an 01 Honda Civic LX manual in near-perfect condition, and it’s an ULE vehicle anyway.
I’ve already check the DMV site and it’s not very user-friendly, nor does it say anything about requirements by address, city, or region. It also says nothing about emmissions testing, so maybe I can assume it’s not necessary?
A: Check out the State of Illinois Department of Motor Vehicles information at the following URL:

Q: Issues in finding out free FM channel for ipod in Chicago?
I have Kensington FM Transmitter cum charger for my video ipod. It does not work consistent in car. I scanned number of channels and found FM 96.7 channel free (no program) and works well with ipod for few miles. This channel is not free in all places. If I go further couple of miles from my apartment, this channel receives radio program. I tried most of the channel and I found that a channel which is free in Chicago is not free in Chicago subsurbs or other states like Winconsin. I made a mistake by buying this for $45. I should have bought indash mp3 player with aux input for ipod for $100. Since I used for two months, I cannot return this product. Any suggestion and advice to overcome this problem. Has anyone
experienced this problem? Any idea which FM channel can work throughtout the US?
A: Here is a program from Sirius that lets you find the best frequency in each area, check it out and see what you can find.
http://fmchannel.sirius.com/
** There won’t be many frequencies that are consistantly not used across several cities simply because the band is too narrow to allow one frequency to go to waste**
Q: I want to hire a Convertable from Chicago and Drive Route 66 to LA – Which company is best to use please?
I’m 24 years old and plan to drive Route 66 with a friend to LA. We want to hire a convertible and do it in style! Can anyone please recommend any good cheap car rental companies?
A: No actually you don’t want to do that
I know that you have this fantasy of driving down Rt 66 with the top down , the sun in your face and the wind in your hair.
The reality is that since most of Rt 66 no longer exists you and your friend are going to be driving and picking thru guidebooks and websites as you play find and lose and find again with what was once Rt 66
If you want to drive a convertible from Chicago to LA there are much much better roads to use than the former Rt 66
The reason that the original Rt 66 was such a popular way west was because it was so boring and that it didn’t cross any big mountains >the highest point on it is west of Flagstaff
As far as convertibles go your choices are kind of limited
Hertz rents both Mustangs and Sebrings and sometimes Eclipses
I’ve rented all three for 1000mi+ trips
While the Sebring won’t turn any heads [ including the local cops] for a long distance trip it is the most comfortable vehicle to rent
Safe trip
Q: Question about Midway and O’Hare airports in Chicago?
Do they still have specially designated areas where you can park you car and watch the planes takeoff and land? I remember as a kid my Grandfather used to take me but that was many years ago. I’m thinking about taking my little nephew and his friends and was just wondering do they still have areas around the airport just for that? Thanks.
A: Here’s some info from a plane spotting site:

Q: Chicago residents, please help!
?
So I want to get to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee from the city (let’s use Downtown Chicago). What is the quickest way to get there on CTA? My man and I do not have a car so we have to use public transportation. I tried the CTA website’s “Trip Planner” but it requires me to call because Six Flags is not listed.
I want REAL directions, please don’t link me to certain sites or numbers…Help me out!
A: This is how to get there using METRA and Pace:
Union Pacific North Line
Board at Ogilvie Transportation Center and ride to the Waukegan Station.
* Walk south about one block to Washington Street. Turn right, walk west on Washington Street, up the hill three blocks to Genesee Street.
* At the NE corner of Washington Street and Genesee Street board either Rte. 572 or Rte. 565.
Milwaukee District North Line
Board at Union Station and ride to the Libertyville Station.
* Walk east towards Milwaukee Avenue.
* Rte. 572 will board at the bus shelter located on the east side of Milwaukee Avenue.
Q: I was planning on moving to chicago, but how’s the living there?
would it be more convenient if i had my own vehicle down there to travel around with, or is it better to just use the transportation available there…like the train or bus.. etc.
Because i have a friend who just recently moved there, and i really need to get away from this town of mine… and as of right now i don’t have a vehicle.. so would it be best if i had a car to get to chicago? or should i just take the bus… also hows the living cost? etc…
And how would i apply for jobs over there… thanks.
A: Chicago is awesome place to live, having a car is only sometimes convenient mostly a big pain and super expensive, parking is nearly impossible, trains, subways, the “L”, and buses are definitely the way to go, I have a transit pass
for the times you absolutely must use a car just rent one http://www.zipcar.com/
