Q: any good reliable first cars for cheap?
I’ve been looking on craigslist for cheap cars which are also reliable.
However, I’m not sure craigslist would be the best place to find one,
because you never know what could possibly be wrong with them.
I have about 700 $ to spend on a car, and was wondering if that’s enough for a running,
decent looking car.
I’m not looking for something new just dependable .
Any one know some places near chicago where i should look?
A: It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota… First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car – for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net
Q: how would you get from chicago to cooperstown new york?
plane or car
A: Fly to Syracuse N.Y. and rent a car.
Q: What’s it like to live in New York City for a kid? How do they get to school? Where do they live?
I live in a small town in the midwest and the biggest city i’ve ever been to is Chicago a couple times. I’m curious in knowing what life is like in a big town.Does everyone have cars or does everybody take taxis. Where i live, everybody has a car at sixteen and most people have houses with big backyards in the country. If you can explain it to me, that would be awesome.
A: 1. in manhatten its rare to own a car. theres never any parking! and putting it in a public garage costs like $165 a month.
we either walk, take the subway, which is just as expensive ($81 a month to ride the train!) or the taxi, which is well, even more expensive.
2. when a kid turns 16, they are given a metrocard for the subway. there are no back yards, unless u live in the other 4 boroughs. nyc has 5 boroughs, the one everyone knows is manhattan. the farther u get from it, the buildings turn into houses, and there are actually back yards!
3. god being a teen in a nyc public high school…. is like a while other experience. they try to make it safe, but well its just not. gangs, drugs, weapons are normal, so there is a branch to the nyc police department for school security. some high schools have metal detectors.
there are cliques, with rich kids only, poor kids, the gangsters, goths/emo’s, so this is normal.
overall though school wasnt too bad. the trips were boring, we always went to places tourists did and we already knew about them.
im currently a student teacher in an elementary schol in harlem, and the kids are angels though the neighborhood scares me to death.
The only thing a student in nyc is deprived of is school funding and a nice back yard to play in.
Q: has anyone ever heard of a water conversion kit for cars and trucks? do they work? how much do they cost?
i need all the details on this product. my husband travels alot on his job. his car broke down and all he has is a truck that gets 12 miles to a gallon maybe less depending on what he has to haul for his jobs. we cant afford the new cars that dont use gas. and can anyone tell me how far you can travel with the water conversion kit? we live in the country and most of his jobs are based in chicago which is two to three hrs away. plus then the drive home. so getting this product might work if it is legit.
A: Sorry but cars wont run off water-if they did everyone would be doing it and there would be no need for gas stations.
Q: Where can I park in New Jersey and take a train to the city?
I’m staying in New York for the weekend, but I don’t want to deal with the traffic. I’d like to leave my car in a safe place and have an easy train ride to the city. After I leave NYC, I’m driving to Chicago so I’d like to stay due west of New York.
Thanks.
A: park your car in the montclair state university train station parking lot….it’s about 3 dollars a day,a very nice community, park it near the attendants office…train to city is about 45 minutes…
Q: how should I serve the defendant after he moved to a new unknown address?
I live in Chicago. I had an accdident in April. No bodily injury but the car was seriously damaged. My insurance company will not cover the loss and the at-fault driver had no insurance. I sued him in May but he moved out of the address on the police report so that the summons didn’t reach him by certified mail. I went to the circuit court and wanted to file the summons form again. But the clerk told me I have to find the new address of the defendant (I am the plaintiff). Otherwise the court will not accept the alias summons form. I went to the Secretary of State office and was told the address was private and confident. I have to ask a lawyer to get the defendant’s address. I called several laywers but none of them would take my case simply because there was no personal injury involved. Can I serve the defendant through the sheriff’s office?
A: You can hire a process server who will find him.
Q: February 27th,2008-Did anyone see Ellen when she gave away those cool cars to those lucky people?
I loved when Ellen and Oprah give away free things and I love the reaction on the people’s faces when they get whatever they are giving away, did you see when Ellen made that phone call and surprised a home viewer with a brand new car because she wrecked her husband’s car, I wonder will she wreck the new car she got, what was your favorite part of the show? I noticed where the lady who won the car lived it was dark outside and I live here in Chicago and Ellen comes on at 3 pm and it is still light outside, anyway I can’t wait to see Thursday show.

A: Yes, I seen it and it was wonderful for that lady.she was in Texas,of course.lol.But the other ladies that drove all the way to Calif.was neat. They all got a car..Ellen is a super neat lady.I watch her every day too.She comes on where I am (in Texas) 9:00 am here and starts my day off with a smile.I love her too.
Q: What are those WAXY YELLOW/BROWN SPOTS we all get on our cars? It’s ll over the USA, I’ve seen it for years!
I’m sure we all have seen those waxy yellow/brown specs on our cars which you usually have to rub extra to get them off. I call them “Bee poop”, but I know its to big for bug poop! I’ve seen it in New York, Chicago, Orlando, Los Angeels, its all over! What is it??
A: I’m fairly certain it’s tree sap.
We’re talking about the ones that dry to a cement like hardened crust, right? Ranging in size from a tiny dot to something about the size of a quarter?
I’ve parked under a conifer for a few years now and I find they are common. If you smell them while they’re fresh, they’re overpoweringly piney smelling.
Q: Moving to from Canada to Chicago, need budget help?
I might be moving my wife, toddler twins and new baby to Illinois and I need to know if we can survive on my single income. If anyone living in the general area can help me figure out the range for the following budget items I would be really grateful.
Home insurance (say 200k home)–
Car insurance (newer car and van, good driving record)–
Phone–
Internet–
Cable–
Utilities (electricity, heat and water)–
Cellphone–
Food (eating almost exclusively at home)–
@ tichur: I would be working near palos heights and it seems like houses in green island or alsip fit the 190-210 range
A: I’m from Iowa originally and currently live in NY but here’s a run down of aproximations:
Home owners insurance: I’d say around $125 per month, probably less- but you can escrow that in with your property taxes…
Car Insurance: between 100-200 depending
Phone, Internet & Cable you should be able to get a package deal for $100 per month- 29.95 per service
Utilities:
Electric: 100-150
Heat: Varies, depends on if you have gas or electric heat
Water: max of 100 per month
Cellphone: our plan is 2 phones, 700 min for $106 per month
Food: with children, I’d say min of $500 a month. My husband and I probably spend about $100 per week and we have no kids.
I’d say you’re looking at around $1,125 per month…
Best of Luck, Chicago is a great city!!
Q: What good will the Oil Corps money be when 65% of America is 186 feet under water?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080316/ap_on_sc/un_melting_glaciers_1
Antarctic melt = 186 feet raise in ocean levels.
That means the roads, cars and refineries are under water too, along with the nuclear power plants, Chicago, New York, LA and Washington DC.
A: They don’t look that far ahead. They don’t care as long as THEY have all the money NOW.
Besides, by the time that happens, they’ll be SO rich and powerful, that they’ll have access to living on other worlds or in special cities, protected from all the disaster they wrought
Q: How expensive and difficult is to find parking in Chicago?
Im traveling for the U2 concert on Sept.12th and also want to go to Six Flags on Sunday 13th. I’m thinking about staying on a hotel near O’Hare Airport and renting a car since hotels downtown are so expensive so I want to know if it’s worth renting the car and paying parking ocassionally or (if it’s as expensive as New York) if I should only rent it when traveling to Six Flags and try using public transportation the rest of the time. Any suggestions?
A: It is expensive and a pain in the neck to park in the area of the city that most visitors go. Take public transportation which is very easy from Rosemont (O’Hare hotels) on the blue line.
Rent a car for the trip to Six Flags but be aware that route is just about completely under construction. You are looking at a 32 mile construction zone plus tolls!
Q: If you leave me now by Chicago?
Who remembers the american love/pop band Chicago?
I made a video clip to the tune of ‘If you leave me now”. It’s about my brand new car and my loving feelings for it… haha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbh-Gnendzc
Let me know what you think! Long live Chicago
A: Shaving the car actually shows that you dont love your Lancer.
You know what tho. For as badly as this could have gone. You actually did a pretty good job. I even laughed out loud a few times.
Q: Getting to Know about Chicago and Maybe Moving Here?
Hi there,
I’ve lived in a suburban area my whole life and am ready to leave this summer. I’d like to go to a city that doesn’t require a car – my top choices are New York, Chicago, and Washington DC.
So I’ve been looking at Chicago neighborhood maps and I have no idea which are the good ones or not? For example I have this map I found: https://coral.uchicago.edu:8443/download/attachments/8128004/Chicago%20Neighborhood%20Map.gif .
My questions:
What area has the most young, single population with bars, clubs, and lounges? Also hopefully these neighborhoods won’t have too much crime.
I think I’ll probably make about 35k in 2009, so rent will have to match this type of income.
Finally I’m still young, under 21. I’m working full time at the moment but I’d like to go college maybe, which ones would be good in the city area? I had an SAT score of 1900 or 2000, around that, and a GPA of 3.4 – 3.6 (I forgot the exact numbers).
I hope I didn’t ask too much. Thanks to anyone who can help!
Thanks Rick! Nah I don’t care about the downtown really. I just didn’t know how Chicago was set up and assumed that was where the young singles were. My only frame of reference with cities is of Manhattan and Brooklyn/Queens. In my mind the people who live in Brooklyn/Queens can get decent priced places and then go to Manhattan for the main nightlife. Is Chicago City basically just a mini-Manhattan then?
A: Your going to get the most out of your income living in Chicago. The best neighborhoods here are Lincoln Park, parts of Logan Square, Wrigleyville, Old Town, Wicker Park, Near North Side, and Lakeview although that’s a vogue area. You can also get into great colleges here such as UIC, Northwestern, Depaul, Colombia, The Art Institute of Chicago, and maybe the University of Chicago. Best of luck and Chicago is wayy better than DC and flithy NYC!!
Q: Question about Chicago City Sticker?
I am junking my car and I want to put my recently purchased city sticker on the new car. The new car will be registered to my husband. How would they find out I’ve done that? Don’t they just check to see if a sticker is in the window, and move on?
A: Different agencies share databases. So if you buy a new car and it is registered in Chicago and they have no record of purchasing a city sticker for it within the time limit, they will eventually send you something in the mail asking you to purchase the sticker including a late fee.
Fortunately Elgin has not had city stickers for years due to revenue from the river boat. Although, my apartment complex towed my truck once when a temporary manager from another town saw an expired city sticker (when no longer required) and old IL EPA window sticker (after those were no longer issued).
Q: Can shock absorbers on a jeep wrangler get damaged from being towed in Chicago?
I was towed. My jeep is lifted a couple inches. I got my car back the same day and scheduled an appt for monday to get it checked @ Chrysler Jeep Dodge. No undercarriage damage, but they said “my shocks were leaking”. I didn’t have time to ask…they were kinda pushy. I’m new with cars. But…. Could the shocks have been damaged from a yellow POS Chicago DOT tow truck?
I asked a guy there who said they stick these claws under the front axel, grab on, and pull away. Not really sure how this tow truck yanks cars.
thanks.
A: the only way i could see them being tore up during towing is if there chained it down to tight and blew the seals or if the driver was going to fast down roads with alot of bad potholes.
