Q: Is Houston a Walkible city?Do you need to rent a car to get around? Is Public Transport any good?any downtown?
Thinking of going to Houston and would like to know if this city is a walking city like New York,Chicago,San Francisco,San Diego or must you rent a car to get around like you do in Orlando,Los Angeles?
Is The Public Transport any good?and does Houston have a downtown area where Tourist can stay and walk around?
Thanks
A: definitely not walkable. houston’s huge and spread out. the only public transportation we have is the bus and one sorry train line and neither will get you but so far. plus the bus sucks and has crappy service(i know i ride it daily, unfortunately). i say rent a car. downtown is cool depending on what you are looking to do. as much as i love my city when i think about other major cities ive gone to and toured, i cant really see what someone would tour in houston but of course thats because i live here. there’s plenty for a visitor. have fun and be safe. some are still on edge after hurricane ike.
Q: Between St Louis and Vegas Where to Stop Off & What to See on Route 66?
Hi Everyone,
We’re doing Boston, New York, Chicago where we pick up the car and begin the drive. I want to see St Louis but then I’m not too sure where else the best places are to stay until we get to Vegas.
Can I please get some advice on Springfield, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Santa Fe, Albuquerque ect?
We’re a group of four 25 year old guys from England who want to see some sights and have some fun doing it!
Many thanks in advance for your help!
A: Man you still haven’t received an answer for this Q?
In addition to the various Rt 66 guide-books and websites The Automobile Club of America’s guide books { AAA] are a great source of highly detailed and accurate info
http://www.aaa.com/aaa/sem/sem.htm?redirectto=http://www.aaa.com/?area=JoinSEM&skin=JoinSEM&
We also have a person named “Chuckles ” on YA that is far more enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Rt 66 than I am
To find her just type in a Rt 66 question in the “search for questions” box and her name should appear on many of the answers
One warning
I don’t know where you guys are from But you sound like a bunch of guys who like to party hearty now an then
You need to know that in America the local cops take driving while intoxicated very seriously >The natonal BAC level is 0.8
So if you’re gonna drink make sure that you either have a designated driver or you can walk /stagger back to where you’re staying
Safe trip
Q: How far is it from?
Chicago to New York by car
Chicago to New York by plane
Chicago to New York Train
Chicago to Florida by car
Chicago to Florida by Plane
Chicago to Florida by train
and what would be the cheapest train or plane
A: How far? More or less the same distance no matter how you go. So I’ll assume you’re asking how long?
Chicago to NY by car is 14-15 hours if you go through without stopping for more than gas. It’s about 800 miles and can be done in one day; I have done that.
Plane: the flight is 2 hours. But the rigamarole to get there early, go through security, get bags, etc makes it 4 hours at least.
Train? Direct route from Chicago is the Amtrak #48 Lake Shore Limited, 20hrs 35 min.
Florida? Where are you going? It’s a big state, Jacksonville and Tallahassee in the North are more than 400 miles closer than Miami. I’ll assume Miami for this. But by car to Miami without stopping is 24 hours and about 1420 miles. You can’t really do that though unless you have two drivers, both of whom can sleep in the car. Otherwise build in time to sleep, because you’ll be taking two long driving days.
Plane? 4 hours to Miami non stop. Of course, add in extra hours for the security, etc. surrounding the trip.
Train? 2 full days. As in leave Monday Evening, get there Wednesday evening. That’s best case. You’ll be taking either 2 or 3 trains to get there.
Orlando is about 2-3 hours closer by car, a little more by train, and 30 minutes by air.
Trains are around the same price as the cheapest plane tickets. So, if you get a good fare, you can beat the train in price. But if you’re buying last minute without a sale, train is cheaper.
E.g., amtrak to Miami round trip is about $256. By air right now (according to Orbitz, 12/10 to 12/17) is as low as $188 ($213 with taxes & fees).
Q: What could possibly be wrong with the stupid car now?
We have a 2001 Taurus. Recently put a new battery, starter, relays, fuel pump into it. The fuel pump was put in by a mechanic on Friday. My husband drove to Chicago for the weekend. Now, he’s stuck there. The battery is dead. Roadside assistance tried to help, but the battery is dead as a door nail. What could it be now?
The battery was put in about a month ago. Right now, the roadside assistance people tried to jump start it, but no good.
one more thing: On the way to chicago, he noticed that the heater wasn’t blowing as well as it normally does.
Thank you ALL for your invaluable advice. He is finally on the road home. As it worked out, the roadside assistance guy’s machine wasn’t strong enough to charge the battery. When he had the car towed to a mechanic, the mechanic charged it up straight away. There may well be still a problem with the car, but he is driving it right now, and not going to stop until he gets back home. The heater is blowing fine again. Maybe the dead battery reset everything.. Anyway, we still need to find out what drained the battery, but it seems to be charged and running fine right now. Thank you again. We will definitely have all of the wires, alternator, spark plugs, grounds etc looked at tomorrow.
A: Hi Sarah
I live in canada and have seen weird things like this. If your alternator
is shot and it sounds like it is, and I know its cold there to. The battery
can freeze so get you husband to bring it inside to thaw. Don’t add heat
let it warm slowly. In the old days and the weather was so cold we brot in ower batteries in every night
Q: How do you get road paint off of your car?
Last year I drove down to Chicago, they were redoing the roads and the white paint is splashed all over the lower portion of my trucks new paint, it is light dots and a lot of little long drizzles, how can I remove it safely without damaging my paint?
A: It has been baking on your truck for a year! “mechanical” methods are all you have now as the paint has been been curing for 12 months. try to push it off with a plastic putty knife. If that doesn’t work you can try a heat gun then a plastic putty knife. if all of that doesn’t work you need to carefully use 600 sand paper attached to high density sponge (like for tile work from Lowes). Be very careful to only sand off the white.
Good luck! Next time if you see it early a little Goof-Off or Tar remover should take it off (and your wax).
Q: Car Alarm Question – Does the remote beep when the alarm goes off?
I just got a new Nissan Murano yesterday, and I’m really, really wanting to get an alarm installed on it, because I live in Chicago, and I don’t really trust that it would be safe during the night, even though I live in a nice town, but people still walk the streets during the night, you know… But I was wondering if, when the alarm goes off, the remote beeps as well?
Thank You.
A: Usually no, although there are some upmarket (read expensive) alarms that will page you if the alarm goes off. Not sure who offers it these days – you’ll have to check the options for each model on the market.
Good luck!
Q: CON’T-Who do you go to for car insurance when your record isn’t so spotless? (Chicago driver)?
When my mom & I recently tried to obtain car ins. through another provider & was denied due to MY recent 3 accident history, the potential new agent told my mom that I should have never filed the claims- whether it was my fault or not. This confuses me, an agent saying not to file a claim after an accident? I prefer not to be sued for future damages when an accident IS my fault, isn’t this part of why we pay for ins? At the time of my last accident, various ins. people here at Y.A. told me NOT to handle anything out of pocket esp where I was at fault. My questions are:1.Should someone ever handle car damages out of pocket if at fault? Why would this agent say this? 2.If an accident is NOT my fault should I try to handle this out of pocket as to avoid filing a claim? What if the other party skips out of paying, then I have no record and or repercussions for obtaining my losses other than suing? 3.Where do you go for coverage should you be dropped & no other major carrier will cover you
A: For car insurance the most efficient way to get a low rate is do a rate comparison on car policies. Make sure that you choose similar options with the same deductibles, car type, zip code, etc so that all options are an accurate comparison.
What I usually recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have discount insurers and will give several prices on auto insurance polices.
Q: Anyone know of a good bodyshop to buff out scratches around Chicago…?
Preferably around the NW part of Chicago [around the brickyard area to be more specific]…accidently made a sharp turn out of my garage and scrape it. The damage is not bad nor does it look too deep, it is white and unfortunately does not rub off…but I rather just buff it out then screw up myself…I wouldnt mind if the car was older but its relatively new (roughly 14months old)
A: there are many …..but the one I can recommend is Rizza Ford…corner of cermak &harlem,….they have an excelent body shop….with decent price,s….good luck!
Q: What happened last night with Chicago Metra? Why were there so many delays? ?
Police were at all the crossigs and when I asked the female officer said they were sending trains out of Union Station. I parked my car one block away and walked over the tracks after watching 6 trains head outbound from the city over about 40 minutes. Very stange and why nothing on the news, maybe Bama is getting a new pet cat???
A: i think you are right – sounds very bama-ish (any one of them). but no on the cat – i think they are pretty strictly dog.
i hope they pick a labrodoodle.
Q: How would a traffic-free urban playground, go over in Chicago?
NYC Experiments With Traffic-Free Urban Playground
NEW YORK – In Paris, they call it La Plage, or the beach. And in Bogota, Colombia, it’s Ciclovia, or bikeway.
For six hours Saturday in New York, it was called Summer Streets: Nearly seven miles of Manhattan that were stripped of traffic, creating a weekend playground for bikers, walkers and loungers.
“Bellissimo!” declared Antonio de Lucia, a tourist from Caserta, Italy, who read about the event and decided to walk about three miles from his Chinatown hotel to a friend’s Times Square restaurant — with more than 90 pounds of luggage. An hour into his hike, he was smiling as he sauntered up a stretch of Park Avenue awash in cyclists, pedestrians and in-line skaters. One man on a bicycle swooped down a sloped section of the avenue yelling “whee!” at full voice.
“It’s a moment of truth for this city. People are participating — New Yorkers are united with their city,” said de Lucia, a 29-year-old business consultant.
Bike-loving celebrities Lance Armstrong and David Byrne are helping Mayor Michael Bloomberg launch the experiment. It emulates similar initiatives in cities around the world in aiming to create a livable, ecologically gentle urban environment.
The 6.9-mile, car-free route started at the Brooklyn Bridge and ended to the north at East 72nd Street, with links to Central Park and other open spaces. It included stretches of Park and Lexington avenues and is set to be repeated for the next two Saturdays, starting at 7 a.m.
The idea is simple, in the words of the city’s official Web site: “Play. Run. Walk. Bike. Breathe.”
Fitness, dance and yoga classes were offered at a central stage along the route, with additional exercise and health activities hosted by community groups at certain cross streets. Bike rental facilities were available along the route, including learn-to-ride lessons for adults.

i’m a new driver and i don’t have care insurance.
I’m going to Chicago for a few days and i plan on renting a car from hertz.
Are they going to allow me to rent a car?

Q: would should i do for my birthday in chicago?
My birthday is coming up in 1 week! i wanna do something fun, memorable and new! of course going to a nice resturant that has drinks goodfood and also maybe a dance floor! i just need some suggestions because i dont have a car so everything i do will include the downtown area!
A: There is so much to do In Chitown. I love day trips too if you’re interested. I love the Lincoln Park zoo ( cheap . only pay for parking). NO car is even better. Pack a lunch or eat there. The city is loaded with the arts and culture too. Have a happy birthday: ) The Chicago chop house is awesome but pricey. The Cheesecake factory is AMAZING and right under the Hancock building. good luck to you
Q: New York Vacation on low budget?
I am planning to go to New York city for spring break. I know it would be a little chilli but I’m from Chicago so shouldn’t be a problem for me. now I need to know if it is better to get there on a plane or Amtrak? ( as being close to the public transportation) and anyone knows any hostel or cheap hotel? and lastly, what is the best way to travel arround? bus? train? or rental car?
A: There are three possible answers to this question.
1. Place to stay: New York City has thousands of hostels to choose from, everything from the YMCA/YWCA to ordinary hostels, some very well known. Two hostels that I know of are the American Youth Hostels, Inc, on the Upper West Side and the YMCA Vanderbilt Center in Midtown. I’ve included there web address at the bottom of this post, along with several other links to Hostels in Manhattan.
2. Transportation to and from New York: Since you’re coming from The Windy City, my best bet will be take Amtrak into Penn Station, New York. They may have discounts for students.
Also Greyhound bus, which always offers discount to students serves New York City, with a stop at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Many low budget airlines travels between New York and Chicago, however they will land at airport far away from the city. You may want to try JetBlue, they have a hub in New York and JFK Airport. Check with them to see if they offer discounts to students.
3. Transportation while in New York: Since you going to be in New York there is no need to rent a car. NYC Transit, like Chicago’s CTA, operates both the buses and subway systems. The fare on both the buses and subway are $2 a ride, but if you’re in town for a week, you can buy a 7-days unlimited MetroCard, which is a fare card similar to the one in Chicago, for $24 and take as many rides as you want on the subway and bus.
I hope this information was very helpful. I need any travel direction while in town, just drop me a line at native.newyorker@hotmail.com.
Good luck and happy travels.

A: Here is the link to the Chicago Tribune:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/
After a quick search, I couldn’t find anything about the accident so you might have to contact the paper or search through the archives, which are usually stories over 7 days old.
Q: What is the max % of tinted glass window allow & still legal?
I want to buy a new minivan & have the car windows tinted as dark as i can & still within the legal limit. I live in IL,Chicago suburb area. The car factory only has it up to 30% tinted glass. Can I have them do it straight from the factory to make it darker? Wonder will it still be those stick on sheet or they actually tinted the glass itself? I never had these done before.
Thanks!
A: It depends on the State, They all have different laws
The southern and western states have laws which lets you have more that 30% tinted
Check with your local Department of Transportation or Secretary of State regarding window tinting
From the Factory, it will be stick on, A professional may do it differently
