Q: Does this topic seem interesting for a book?
in my AP Literature class we are going to write books. It seems daunting, and it kind of pisses me off i have such a hard class as a senior but i know if i find something interesting to write about, it will go really fast. OF course i couldn’t choose what to write about, and we all picked slips and i got “Separation of the classes” as my topic. My idea is to write about 50 years into the future and how there is an outbreak of zombies and all of the different social classes have survived and are living in different suburbs of Chicago. The upper class is on the Gold Coast, The middle is in Linkin Park or something, and the Lower class is in Wrigleyville. They have all separated and gated themselves into their own districts and the stereotype of each social class is the leader for that “tribe.” The upper class will be wearing tattered couture and driving luxury cars with guns and crap on them. They will have rusty private planes that bomb the city full of zombies. Obviously it is in its rough stages…. But does that sound some what interesting to more of a teenager reader?
A: ZOMBIES. awesome.
Anyways, I think it would be cool to have all the classes live together.
if they’re all separate, it just seems like they’re three groups of people, and it doesn’t emphasize the CLASS difference. Besides, if they’re all separated, no one will know what the others are doing/wearing/etc. (i’m assuming it’s a post-apocalyptic world, and there isn’t much technology like TV)
I think you should make them all live together, and have that tension be there. The tension between the rich and the poor would be fun to write. Especially from a person in the lower class point of view. And to make a statement, or for another emphasis on class separation, you can maybe have the rich be able to afford to live safely within the walls of the city, but the poor are “forced” to go out and protect the town from zombies because that’s the only job available or whatever. So like, if you apply to be a zombie-killer they compensate your family… BUT THEN, the zombie killers have a low chance of coming back alive..!!
You can make a caste system too, like what level everyone is, determines the kind of job they can get. And crimes/sins (like adultery) can make you go down in the list, and marrying higher castes can make you move up the ladder. And maybe the higher castes/levels like watching the zombie-killers protecting the town, like it’s their sick perversion to see them get killed.
So YEA. sorry, i dunno exactly where I’m going with this, but i think to emphasize the separation of class, you have to emphasize the difference– not necessarily by where they live– but rather how they think, how they live, and possibly how they die?
And if you need MORE, it’s always fun to see how a lower class member interacts with a higher class member of the opposite sex. Maybe add some hatred/romance in there. haha.
Hope that helped and made sense…
