Q: Two cars leave chicago at the same time. One heads due west while the other heads south…?
After 15 minutes, the westbound car had gone 5 miles father than the southbound car,and they are 25 miles apart. How far has the south bound car gone?
A: Draw a diagram. The two cars’ current positions form a right triangle with their starting positions. Let x be the distance the westbound car has gone, which is the base of the triangle, and let y be the distance the southbound car has gone, which is the height. Here’s what you know about the relationship between x and y from the problem:
The westbound car went 5 miles further: x = y + 5
The distance between the cars (the hypotenuse of the triangle) is 25: 25^2 = x^2 + y^2
Plug the value for x from the first equation into the second equation and solve for y.
x = y + 5
25^2 = x^2 + y^2
625 = (y + 5)^2 + y^2
625 = y^2 + 10y + 25 + y^2
2y^2 + 10y + 25 = 625
2y^2 + 10y – 600 = 0
y^2 + 5y – 300 = 0
(y + 20)(y – 15) = 0
y = 15
The southbound car has gone 15 miles.
Q: two cars leave chicago at the same time. One heads due west while the other heads south…?
After 15 minutes, the westbound car had gone 5 miles father than the southbound car,and they are 25 miles apart. How far has the south bound car gone?
A: W = west distance
S = south distance
W = S + 5
distance apart is 25 = sqrt( W^2 + S^2 )
To solve this, square both sides
25^2 = 625
So we get
625 = W^2 + S^2
Plug in for W = S + 5
625 = (S+5)^2 + S^2
625 = S^2 + 10S + 25 + S^2
Now use the quadratic formula, to solve for S.
* Note: this assumes a flat Earth. Since the real Earth is not flat, the real answer is not quite the same as you will get from these formulas.
Q: Cars at Loyola Chicago?
I applied to Loyola University Chicago a few weeks ago and I can’t find anything about cars on the website. Does anyone know if freshman are allowed to have cars on campus?
Thanks!
A: Don’t bring one. It’s way too expensive and you won’t ever use it!
Q: how much torque does each the traction motors of the Chicago subway / L railway cars produce?
The Chicago L train railway cars weigh 25 Tonnes each get its power from 600 volt DC third rail . There are four axles and a traction / electric motor for each of them and some type of transmission which has obviously some gear reduction . Each motor produces 110 horsepower (82 kW) . So each motor is hauling more than 6 tonnes . I know that large semi tractors have 1500 to 2000 foot pound torque rating . I was wondering how much torque each of the motors produce and what is the gear ratio between the motor shaft and the axle . Sources of information http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CTA_rolling_stock#Current . New York subway cars are also similar except they weigh much more . Can anyone please post any information regarding this ?
A: Probably far less than you would think. Although each motor is responsible for propelling 6 tons, that doesn’t mean that it is exerting 12,000 ft/lb of torque. For example, my car weighs close to 3,000 pounds, but I can push it around my driveway with some effort. Rail cars also have a significantly lower rolling resistance than automobiles, so given a straight and level track, I might be able to push a rail car weighing a few tons with the same effort. For example, Timken Roller Bearing Company once conducted a publicity stunt where three women pulled a locomotive weighing 190 tons to show the effectiveness of roller bearings in steam locomotive construction. The rolling resistance of the locomotive was about 10 ounces per ton. Even if the L trains use traditional plain bearings, the force required to move a 6-car train would be probably comparable to the force required to move a large, fully loaded semi or two. As another example, Boston Sand and Gravel regularly uses front-end loaders to switch their spurs near North Station in Boston. I have seen one loader (about 300 horsepower) pushing strings of 8 to 10 loaded hopper cars.
As for gear ratios, the cars are probably geared rather low because of the low speeds and need for fast acceleration in found in rapid transit.
Q: How hot inside my car? Chicago, may31st, 78 degrees, Leather tan interior, sunny windy, after 2 hours, guess?
A: well…i would say alot cooler than it is here in texas when you step outside in the middle of the day. be thankful.
Q: Looking for a car in Chicago. Is front wheel drive the safer choice in the winter? Rear wheel drive?
Have had a Subaru. Can’t afford another one. Loved the Nissan Cube but am a little weary of the 2wd. Not in the mood for fish tailing…
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
A: yes its good
Q: How much money do you need to make to live well in Chicago?
I currently live in Los Angeles and I would like to move to Chicago; I am unsure of how much money I would need to make to live comfortably out there. I am looking to have a one bedroom in the city, close to transportation and entertainment so I dont have to bring a car. Any suggestions Chicago people???
A: From $40-50,000 a year should be comfortable. There are some decent neighborhoods that have one bedrooms from $650-900 a month. Find one with all utilities includes or at least one utility. Public transportation here is pretty good (but the basic fare is going up) so you don;t need a car to get around. There is no centralized entertainment area like a lot of smaller cities.. You can live in just about any neighborhoods and be near a cool bar or great restaurant. You can find places only a couple of blocks from the lake or far west in a quiet tree-lined neighborhood. Check the link below. It has info on the various neighborhoods, as well as photos. If you click on the neighborhoods, it will show the average income, what kind of people live there, etc.
Q: When I left Chicago, I had two outstanding parking tickets. Should I pay them, or not?
I live in Germany, and do not plan to move back and own a car in Chicago, but plan to visit there.
Are my tickets tyed to my driver´s license somehow, and if I´m caught-let´s say speeding-will the police know I have parking tickets there?
Sorry-I do not own a car in Chicago!
A: No. Don’t pay them. They won’t affect your credit rating and no, cops can’t see that you have unpaid parking tickets on the computer. Doesn’t work that way. Parking tickets are in no way attached to your drivers license because parking tickets are not moving violations. Even if you owned a car in Chicago you need four deliquent parking tickets to be eligible for the boot. My advice is to rip up the tickets and tell old Daley to go screw himself.
Q: wheres a race track to race cars for free and practice in chicago?
A: In 12 years of living, and racing, in Chicagoland, I never found anywhere that let you race for free (legally). There are costs in legal racing that must be payed and entry fees (and track rental) help pay those.
Q: Where to park in Chicago for Cheap?
We are traveling by car to Chicago and staying in the Trump Hotel, but don’t want to pay the $52 parking fee at the hotel. Are there any places nearby that offer parking for less than $52? Any advice would be great!
A: Michigan Ave, Downtown, Loop, etc.. are all going to have expensive parking. Your best bet is to park in one of the park and ride lots, and then jump on the EL or cab it. The overnight lots are around $12/night.
Q: What cars would you recommend to be good for people living in Chicago?
This would be my first car, so I don’t want it to be too fancy and I want it to be affordable. What cars do you think would be good for Chicago weather? Please be as specific as possible. Or what would I look for in terms of like horsepower or something? Please help!
I wanted to get the Honda Fit, but someone told me that the engine is too weak for Chicago weather (rain and snow in winter), and that I should get a car with a much stronger engine. I’ve also heard that 4wd cars really don’t matter much and that 2wd works just fine. Plus I have a garage so the car will be in the garage when I’m at home (don’t know if that matters). I’d like a car that’s not too big too ’cause of parking and stuff.
A: If you don’t want to get a 4wd or all wheel drive vehicle. Get a vehicle with front wheel drive with traction control and abs brakes. Most front drive vehicles are fine in the Chicagoland area. You might want to think about purchasing a set of wheels and tires for the winter season. Get 4 steel wheels with ice and snow tires. Best of luck.
Q: Is it legal to display a license plate on the dashboard of a car while parked in Chicago?
I was ticketed for putting my plate on the dash a few weeks ago in Chicago. I was actually at home depot getting zip ties for it while i got the ticket. Is it legal to have it there?
A: No, it’s not legal.
It’s a safety hazard to the driver. Zip ties or not. And the law states it must be displayed on the front of the vehicle. NOT inside the vehicle. Does NOT matter how visible you think it is.
The ticket is 100% legit. Put your license plate where it’s suppose to go.
Q: has anyone seen the gotham city cars/batmobile in chicago yet?
if you havent, you dont know what youre missing…im still trying to work out taking a pic though….stupid guards..
A: Batmobile eh? Please send me pics when you take them!
Q: Is it possible for someone with bad credit to buy a car in Chicago?
Used car,maybe from a dealer,or if from a private owner,$300 dollars or less.Has to run well,don’t care about the body.
A: Pay cash. It’s the only smart way to buy a car anyway.
Q: Where is there a junkyard for car pieces in chicago?
i bought a buick regal and im gonna need to fix it up a bit and im looking for some pieces that i could restore and put on this beauty could you help? thanks!
A: just go online u can order alot of parts that way or check the phone book there are alot of junk yards here but not sure about there but most are online now or atleast the better ones good luck
